Popular NJ indoor rink gets $8 million for renovations

The Warinanco Sports Center will undergo an $8 million renovation with plans to build a new ice rink on the covered site.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners received money from the State of New Jersey to rebuild the existing rink, located at 1 Park Dr. in Roselle.

The project is expected to start by the end of 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2025. Conceptual designs will include a second layer of ice to increase the capacity of the facility.

“Right now we have a great facility in use, but it can only be used seasonally,” Commissioner Chair Rebecca Williams said. “With the construction of a new state-of-the-art indoor rink, we will be able to offer year-round use of the building, attracting even more visitors and leagues.

The sports center is located in Warinanco Park, which has hosted ice skating sessions since 1961.

The rink, which sits adjacent to the park, was renovated and renamed Warinanco Sports Center in 2019. It opens seasonally and is home to eight Union County high school hockey teams.

“Sporting events and recreational skating will be more accessible and affordable for working families,” said Sen. Joe Cryan, D-Union.

This year, public ice skating sessions begin Nov. 5, according to the rink’s website.
