Ice skating superstar quits

The quadruple axel – a jump of 4½ rotations – has never been completed in competitive figure skating.

It’s a demanding feat, requiring strength, balance, endurance and confidence. It’s one of the few remaining challenges for Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who retired from competitive skating this week after an extraordinary career. He is considered one of the greatest figure skaters of all time, and his departure leaves a gaping hole in the sport. He will eventually be filled, but we will miss him.
