From the ice rink to the Wilkes-Barre public square

WILKES-BARRE, ALZERNE COUNTY (WBRE / WYOU) – New addition in downtown Wilkes-Barre. Think of Rockefeller Center, but on a much smaller scale.

Prepare to take your skates. People will soon be able to slide for free on an ice rink in the public square.

“When I talk to people, I can see them in their faces, really? Is it really going to happen? … It is really going to happen, “said Mayor George Brown of Wilkes-Barre.

Mayor Brown confirms this. An ice rink should be built in the public square of Wilkes-Barre.

“Imagine this. It’s a beautiful winter evening, we lit the Christmas tree, we have all the beautiful lights around the trees in the square, we have a beautiful ice rink with children and families enjoying it ”, explained Brown.

Take a look at this render of the 73-foot-long by 23-foot-wide rink below.

“In fact, we now have the entire wall unit at DPW. We wait for the ice part to come and it’s on its way, ”said Brown.

This is great news for young figure skaters like Harper Acornley: “Sounds exciting! I think this is a good idea.

Emma Murphy can’t wait to pass the puck outside.

“I think it would be really fun to practice there honestly, or just skate there with my friends,” said Murphy.

The free attraction is meant to give a much needed boost to the local economy.

“You are here now, frequent the stores. And also, maybe go to Boscov. Go to different restaurants in the city center. But the main thing is to get the young people out. Let’s ice skate them, ”Brown said.

Mayor Brown hopes to have it installed by the end of this month. You might be wondering who is paying for this. Mayor Brown says federal government funds will come from the US bailout.
