East Kilbride ice skating star wins gold at British Novice Championships

Young ice skater Julian Mullin celebrates after recently winning the men’s intermediate title at the British Novice Championships in Sheffield.

The 12-year-old was in fine form at the event last month as he stepped onto the podium to claim gold, adding to a silver medal he won in the novice event baseline at the end of 2021.

Coached by Leanne Collins at the downtown-based Olympia Figure Skating Club, Julian’s return to the rink was very successful after the disappointment of not having ice to train on during the pandemic for more than a year. year.

And Leanne is proud of the progress Julian has made during the difficult time.

She told Lanarkshire Live Sport: “Julian came back on a high winning silver at the Basic Men’s Novice Championships in December and now the Men’s Intermediate title in April.

“For a year he kept working skills motivated off the ice thanks to zoom lessons set up by club coaches, which meant his return to his skating was a smoother transition on the ice. .

“And it showed how committed Julian is to his sport.”

Julian is currently ranked number one in the UK for his level and age and is also a member of the UK development squad.

Leanne added: “Julian is now focused on preparing for international competition to represent his country and to move up to the advanced novice boys section next season.”
