Dancing on Ice: venues in the North East offering ice skating lessons

And Dancing on Ice, the popular ITV show, is putting more celebrities through their paces as they learn tricks and twists on the ice with their professional skating partners.

Mentored by skating queen Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, this year’s celebrity lineup includes Coronation Street’s Sally Dynevor and Happy Mondays member Bez.

With the new series of the hit skating show underway and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics fast approaching, the interest of people wanting to strap on their skates and hit the ice themselves will grow. increasingly popular across the country.

With only two rinks remaining in the North East, the ice will no doubt be much busier over the next few weeks due to Dancing on Ice which will inspire many.

Billingham Ice Arena is the more local option for Teessiders who have been encouraged to put on their skates.

First opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967, the rink underwent a major renovation in 2011 so avid skaters can enjoy the latest facilities.

With 200,000 visitors a year, Billingham Ice Arena offers parties and ‘club nights’ as well as ice skating lessons for those who want to be the next Torvill and Dean.

Adults and children of all levels can access ice skating lessons, either in groups or in private 1:1 lessons.

The other North East ice rink is in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear.

Opened in the 1960s, the rink also served as a live music venue before Newcastle Arena opened, with artists like Wham!, AC/DC and The Cure performing there over the years.

Home to the Whitley Warriors hockey team, the rink is open to skaters of all skill levels to skate freely or take lessons if they want to hone their skills on the ice.

Children as young as two years old are welcome to learn to ice skate at Whitley Bay and the rink also offers adult lessons as well as ice hockey skating lessons for children and adults.
