The Capital High School Chamber Choir will perform at 7 p.m. on December 9.

The city offers Sensory Skates, with subdued lighting and no loud music, from 10 a.m. to noon on Sundays.

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Ice Skating Club is hosting a competition this weekend at the SportONE Parkview Icehouse for Non-Qualifiers, Learn to Skate and Compete USA for the State of Indiana.

Fort Wayne Ice Skating Club has approximately 100 members who compete in various competitions across the country. Fort Wayne is unique because the SportONE Parkview Cooler has three patches of ice.

“We usually do two or three competitions a year, the last competition we had was over 450 skaters for a national competition, so we bring thousands of people to the city,” said Tess Gilbert, club media manager. ice skating rink in Fort Wayne.

Skaters Jordyn Gilbert, Claire Bergman and Quinn Strick are qualified level skaters, which means they compete in the intermediate women’s events hosted by US Figure Skating.

“I saw her at the Olympics when I was little and begged my mom for two years and she finally took me to an ice rink. I knew I wanted to do it, I saw older skaters doing cool stuff, ”says Quinn Strick. She hopes to make it to the Olympics and the national competition.

This weekend’s event which will host approximately 200 skaters is free to spectators.

“I hope to make it to the Olympics one day, it takes a lot of work and sacrifice to get there,” said Jordyn Gilbert. Gilbert is an Indiana State Championship winner and a figure skating gold medalist in the United States.

“It takes a lot of hard work as an ice skater. We skate six hours a day, ”explains Claire Bergman. She hopes to do a few triple jumps and win a medal in competition.

The next competition these skaters will participate in is Battle of the Blades hosted by the Fort Wayne Ice Skating Club in August 2022.

Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, skating on “Gladiator”, jumped from seventh place overnight to win the Turin Grand Prix on Saturday.

Mikhail Kolyada of Russia took second from fourth place while Daniel Grassl wowed the home crowd with bronze, his first medal at this level.

Kagiyama, the 2021 world silver medalist, was in a modest seventh place after a faulty short program, but fought back in style on Saturday.

“Of course, I just found out that I finished in first place, so I’m very surprised,” Kagiyama, 18, told isu.org.

“Coming into the long program I didn’t even think about getting on the podium or getting a good score, I just intended to do my best.

After the short program I couldn’t change my mindset and even this morning I felt bad in training. I didn’t know what to do with the situation. “

World champion Anna Shcherbakova of Russia took the victory in the women with a new personal best in the free skate.

Her compatriot Maiia Khromykh finished second on her debut while overnight leader Loena Hendrickx took bronze.

Hendrickx, who led the short program on Friday, becomes the first Belgian woman to win a medal in a figure skating grand prix.

Shcherbakova set a personal best 165.05 points in the free skate for a total of 236.78 points

“My main goal for this competition was to show that my quad is back and I have achieved that goal,” said the 17-year-old.

“I made a few mistakes in the short program and will work on it. The short program should be clean every time, but I’m happy and satisfied with my performance today.”

In ice dance, the quadruple French world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won gold.

World silver medalists Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the United States finished second ahead of Russians Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin.

Papadakis and Cizeron impressed the judges with their elegant interpretation of “Elegie” by Faure.

China’s Sui Wenjing and Han Cong won the gold as a couple ahead of teammates Peng Cheng and Jin Yang, while Russians Iuliia Artemeva and Mikhail Nazarychev settled for bronze.

Two-time world champions Sui and Han skated on “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and collected 144.48 points for the free skate with a total of 224.55 points in total.

Jewell Mason, a student at MCCC, has always found a second home on the ice at Taylor SportsPlex.

Mason continues his figure skating career with an adult-level synchronized skating team.

When she was 3, an ice skating scene appeared on Mickey Mouse, Mason said. It was then that she told her mother that she wanted

skate.

“I skated very consistently over the next 15 years,” Mason said.

Mason said she went from classes where she learned the basics to private one-on-one lessons so she could compete in solo competitions.

In all of her hours on the ice, the most rewarding experiences are when she is individually skating, working on a hard jump, spin or move, Mason said. When she finally lands, she still hears praise from all of her fellow skaters who have watched her progress for many years.

Although solo skating is a category where she has been very successful, she said she discovered synchronized skating teams at the age of 8 and it has been a high priority in her training.

Amy Wright, coach and director of the synchronized skating program, said that synchronized skating, like synchronized swimming, is a time when a group of people perform complex tricks on the ice in synchronization with each other.

As she started college, Mason passed the youth team and entered Evolution, the adult open synchronized skating team through the Southeast Michigan Skate Club.

“It’s a great way for people to get involved in skating while still being able to compete as adults and have the support of their teammates,” said Wright.

Mason had to cut back on skating a few years ago because she suffered a knee injury resulting in extended recovery, but that didn’t stop her, Mason said. With the support of her teammates for recovery, she plans to continue skating her entire life.

Mason is the youngest member of the team of skaters aged 18 to over 50, said Megan Brown, another skater.

Each brings their unique talents and weaknesses, and they help each other, said Jenny Gibson, Evolution coach.

“Jewell brings a positive attitude to the group,” Gibson said. “She’s a team player.”

Mason would like to bring skating to the MCCC.

“I was hoping to create what we call a collegiate team, which is a collegiate level team to represent the MCCC at competitions like other colleges do like Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Adrian College,” Mason said. .

Mason said she did not know the skating community at MCCC, but would like to recruit.

“You don’t have to have synchronized skating experience, you just need to know how to skate,” said Brown.

Every Sunday evening, the synchronized skating team performs its routine and trains in both on and off ice training.

Eight full-time students are needed to form an open collegiate synchronized skating team, Wright said.

“We promoted because we’re having a lot of fun, but we like to be very competitive,” Wright said.

Even with a full academic load, Mason said she takes time for the activity she enjoys the most.

“Skating is a real comfort to me,” said Mason. “It’s very relaxing for me, even under the most stressful circumstances. I plan to skate for the rest of my life.

Mason said she thinks every skater should try synchronized skating. Contact her at jmason2@my.monroeccc.edu for information.
