Beat the heat, sweat while ice skating | Get in shape
The weather is just starting to get cooler in San Antonio, but you can get a head start on winter and still burn some calories.
SAN ANTONIO – Looking for a way to beat the heat? It’s winter all year round at the Northwoods Ice and Golf Center!
The facility has public skating hours every day. It costs $ 10 to enter and $ 4 to rent a pair of ice skates.
Doris Beckley is a figure skating coach at Northwoods with decades of experience. She said hitting the rink is a fun way to burn calories.
“Fifteen minutes later, you’re going to feel it,” Beckley said. “You engage your heart, your upper body and your legs. “
Cadence Floyd is a 9 year old figure skater. She has been skating for three years.
“It’s an amazing sport,” said Floyd. “You can learn a bunch of new tricks and it’s really a lot of fun! “
Floyd’s favorite part on the ice is playing axels.
“An axis is where you pull your arms out and rotate through the air a turn and a half,” Floyd said.
The adrenaline rush stays with Floyd as she leaves the rink.
“I’m still so energized after training,” said Floyd. “My mom tells me ‘Wow!'”
You don’t have to be at Floyd’s level to feel the burn. Eleven laps around a standard ice rink go one mile.
Beckley’s advice for newbies? Remember to dress warmly and not to be nervous. You are here to have fun!
“I think you’ll be surprised how much you appreciate it,” Beckley said.
