Bay Area figure skaters to open season at Skate America in Las Vegas

Four Bay Area skaters will open the season at Skate America Oct. 23-25 in Las Vegas, U.S. figure skating officials said Thursday.

Olympian Karen Chen of Fremont and Kate Wang of San Francisco are entered in the women’s competition. Wang, 15, is making his senior international debut.

Olympian Vincent Zhou of Palo Alto and ice dancer Anthony Ponomarenko of Morgan Hill, along with their partner Christina Carreira, also compete in the ISU Grand Prix.

Reigning two-time US champion Alysa Liu of Richmond will not be eligible for senior competition until the 2021-22 season due to age restrictions. Liu, 15, missed the July 1 age limit by about five weeks.

Skaters are not aware of a full competition schedule in the season leading up to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic. Officials from the International Skating Union have announced that the Grand Prix Series competitions will be limited to athletes living, training or in the event area.

According to US Figure Skating, its athletes are only eligible for Skate America and Skate Canada.

The plan to host Skate America could be a positive sign for organizers in San Jose who hope to host the 2021 U.S. Championships Jan. 11-17 at the SAP Center.
